Abstract

Migraine is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of severe headache, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and phonophobia. It affects nearly 12–15% of the global population, with a higher prevalence in women compared to men. The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed migraine as one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, particularly in young and middle-aged adults (Steiner et al., 2018). Despite its prevalence, effective management of migraine remains a challenge due to variability in individual response, slow onset of action of conventional dosage forms, and gastrointestinal disturbances that impair oral drug absorption. Zolmitriptan, a selective serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist, is one of the most effective drugs used in the acute treatment of migraine. However, the conventional oral tablets of zolmitriptan suffer from limitations such as low oral bioavailability (40–45%), due to extensive first-pass metabolism and delayed onset of action.
